2026 fire season recap

How the 2026 fire season hit western hot springs

102 of the 301 hot springs we track, about one in three, had a 2026 wildfire within 15 miles. 32 had one within 6 miles, and 6 ended up inside a burn area.

We checked every hot spring on this site against the National Interagency Fire Center's 2026 wildfire perimeters: 708 fires of 100 acres or more across the western states, as of 19 Oct 2026. A fire nearby doesn't always mean a spring closed, but it often means closed roads and trails, smoke, and burned ground for years after. Here is what the season looked like.

Inside a burn area (6)

These springs sit inside a 2026 fire perimeter. Some resorts here are open as normal, but burned ground can bring closures, hazard trees and debris flows after heavy rain, so check with the land manager or the resort before you go.

Before your next trip

Fire season is winding down, but burned areas stay closed or risky well into next year. Every spring page on this site runs a check each morning against active fires, this year's burn areas, Forest Service closures and weather warnings. The closures list shows every spring that's flagged today, and the winter guide covers which springs you can still reach once the snow comes.

How we worked this out

For each spring we measured the distance to every 2026 fire perimeter of 100 acres or more in NIFC's year-to-date dataset, excluding prescribed burns. Distances are straight-line to the nearest edge of the perimeter. "Inside a burn area" means the spring's location falls within a perimeter. Fire sizes are mapped perimeter acres. How our daily check works.
