Nevada soaking is mostly wide-open desert and BLM land, with a few developed spots near the cities. Carson Hot Springs in Carson City is the easy one, with four outdoor pools and walk-ins welcome, and David Walley's Hot Springs in Genoa is a classic resort just south. Most of the rest are free natural springs reached by dirt road, often a long way from services.
The far north has the best-known wild soaks. Black Rock Hot Springs and Soldier Meadows Hot Spring lie around the Black Rock Desert near Gerlach, both on rough roads. Spencer Hot Springs near Austin has metal trough tubs and a valve to adjust the temperature, and Bartine Hot Springs near Eureka has hand-built stone tubs. In the south, Rogers Spring near Overton is a warm palm-shaded pool at about 82°F.
Conditions decide the trip. Dirt roads turn to mud in rain and the playa can be impassable when wet, so check the weather first. Summer heat is severe, so fall to spring is kinder. Many sources run far hotter than the pools, so test the water. Some, like Trego Hot Springs, carry public health warnings, so read the page before you go.
